Visiting ethnic minority villages is one the most interesting activities of foreigners when travelling in Sapa. However, there is posibility that you are not welcomed if you do not follow the advice Vietnam Of Places is giving below:
Visit in a small group
The tourists, especially the foreigners like to explore culture and lifestyle of the ethnic minority groups by visiting their villages. However, it is advised to visit the minority villages in a small group, ideally four people or less because this will be more convenient for you to communicate more with villagers. Most of them are welcoming and hospitable to visitors.
Be sentitive
Each ethnic minority group has its own habits and customs. The behaviors that we take for granted may annoy some ethnic minority people; remember you are a guest. Apart from being sensitive to every situation, the following simple rules should be stricly obeyed when you visit the ethnic minority groups.
Dress conservatively, the long trousers or skirt and T-shirt are recommended.
Shooting
Ask permission from ethnic minority people whenever you intend to take photograph of them or their houses, particularly of the old people who are not very confident with camera.
When enterting their house
Only go inside a house when you are invited and remember to leave your shoes at the door before entering.
Gift offer
Small gifts, such as fresh fruits are always welcome. However, there is a view that you should only ever give in return for some service or as a response for hospitality, a compromise is to buy craftworks produced by the villagers. Most ethnic minority groups have some embroideries, textiles or basketries for sale.
Learn some basic dialects
As a way to pay your respect, you should learn the local languages. This will help you get closer to the native people.
Environment protection
The ethnic minority people love nature because they think that it protects them and gives them food to live. Therefore, do not damage natural resources and try to minimize your influence on environment. If not, you will be asked to get out of their area.
Drug is prohibited
Growing and using drug is illegal in Vietnam that may be punished with a fine or prison sentence. Do not drag you into trouble by buying or using it.
